At Radius Security, we believe our people are the reason we lead the industry in real-time crime response. Behind every successful apprehension is a sharp eye, a critical thinker, and a teammate who never gives up. Today, we’re proud to celebrate a major milestone: over 1,000 apprehensions led by one of our top Command Center Operators, Edward Corbett.
This post is guest-written by Ed himself; a look behind the camera at what it takes to stop crime before it happens, and how a life of curiosity, experience, and dedication can translate into real-world results.
Meet Ed: The Man Behind the Milestone
“My name is Edward Corbett. I’m 56, born in Vancouver, and I’ve lived in BC for most of my life,” Ed begins.
With a background as diverse as it is impressive - former RCMP officer, jail guard, web programmer, drummer, and loss prevention specialist - Ed has brought decades of experience into his role at Radius Security. Since joining in 2016, he has become a trusted Command Center Operator, known for his calm under pressure and sharp instincts.
“Now, after more than 8 years, I can confidently say joining Radius was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
The Formula Behind 1,000+ Apprehensions
How does one person achieve such an incredible milestone?
Ed points to a combination of training, instinct, and Radius’ core values, what we call our DNA. One value in particular resonates deeply with him: Be Curious.
“Growing up, I always wanted to understand the why. That curiosity turned into a drive to read, learn, and analyze - skills I use every night on the job.”
But Ed also credits a personal acronym: JDLR - Just Doesn’t Look Right. This simple but powerful mindset helps him and his colleagues evaluate situations in real-time using live video monitoring. Is someone on-site when they shouldn’t be? Does their behavior match the time and location? If not, it’s a signal to act.
As a former RCMP officer, Ed understands how to communicate effectively with law enforcement during an incident. His secret? Details.
“One depends on their dispatcher for up-to-date information and critical intel, especially in emergent situations when the dispatch is live, the suspect is on view and continuing whatever activities they are doing. So, when I speak to police dispatchers, I want to be able to provide that information in the same manner they are getting it from officers out in the field; what are they wearing, what do they look like, what are they doing, which way they are going, and so forth. To me, directional knowledge is invaluable. If you can tell the dispatcher that a suspect is going north, south, east or west, or when that’s not immediately clear, I rely on landmarks: they’re going to a red vehicle, they’re standing by a tall neon sign, etc. Anything that you can relay to them that will effectively put a big red arrow on the suspect can make the difference in getting that successful apprehension.
Building Stronger Security With Customers and Colleagues
In recent years, Ed has also helped train new operators in our Richmond and Calgary Command Centers. His advice?
- Know your site.
- Understand your surroundings.
- Trust your instinct.
“It’s hard to train intuition, but with experience, it becomes second nature. And the more we know about your site, the better we can protect it.”
To Radius customers, Ed offers this important reminder: security is a partnership. Keeping your team in the loop (like letting us know if someone will be on-site after hours) helps prevent false alarms and enables faster response when it counts. It also helps us harden your site, ensuring equipment is out of view, entrances are secure, and sensitive areas are monitored more closely.
A Moment That Stands Out
With over 1,000 apprehensions, it’s hard for Ed to choose a favorite. But one arrest in Surrey, BC still stands out.
A man was circling a car dealership late at night, trying to break in. Ed spotted him and immediately contacted the RCMP. The suspect didn’t get far, and as it turns out, he was wanted on a long-standing warrant, had evaded arrest for some time. Responding officers were especially pleased at having finally apprehended him.
Tthis I took a sense of pride knowing that, while he may not have gotten into the dealership to do who knows what, I was part of something contributing to the greater good.”
Looking Ahead: Why People Still Make the Difference
As security technology evolves, Ed is optimistic but grounded.
“AI will continue to play a bigger role, but the core of Radius is our people. Technology helps, but it can’t replace teamwork, intuition, and care.”
Ed isn’t slowing down anytime soon. With his eye on mentoring the next generation of Command Center Operators, he hopes to keep passing on the knowledge and experience down to others so that they too can continue in providing the best possible service for customers, new and existing.
Final Thoughts
“The core of Radius is our people, working together as a team, in pursuit of the same goals and positive outcomes, and no amount of technology can replace them. We’re Radius. Let us protect you.”
Ed’s story is a powerful reminder that behind every alert, dispatch, and apprehension is a human being making real-time decisions that protect lives and property.
At Radius Security, we don’t just monitor, we act. And thanks to leaders like Ed, our commitment to stopping crime before it happens has never been stronger.
